On September 12, 2013, preliminary meetings were held at Homer Drive Elementary School in Beaumont (Beaumont ISD) to introduce the campus administration and science teachers to the 4-H Youth Program. It was decided that the Teaching Agricultural Sustainability Through Economics (T.A.S.T.E.) program created in the Community Economic Development (CED) Unit of the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University would serve as the catalyst for launching a new 4-H Club at Homer Drive that would focus on gardening and entrepreneurship along with traditional 4-H leadership and club activities. The Dean of the College of Agriculture & Human Sciences; the Director of Marketing, Development, Planning, Communications & Information Technology in the College of Agriculture & Human Sciences at Prairie View A&M University; the Jefferson County Agent (4-H), the Jefferson County Agent (CED), and the Liberty County Agent (CED) were in attendance at the inaugural meeting.
On this Saturday, December 14th, those six entries competed in the Jefferson County Food Show and all of the students were recognized with the following results: Shaun Tran awarded first place in the category of Grains; Jeremiah Collier awarded second place in the category of Grains; Kaidon Williams awarded third place in the category of Grains; Alana Husted awarded first place in the category of Fruit/Veg.; Janyah Jenkins awarded third place in the category of Fruit/Veg. and Kaleb Walker was awarded the First Timer Award in the category of Grains.
