West Brook High School journalism students junior Madeline Culver and sophomore Marycarmen Perales were awarded the Interscholastic League Press Conference (UIL’s press club) Director’s Certificate of Superiority for Feature Writing. This is a special recognition that is awarded by the State University Interscholastic League’s Journalism President Jeanne Acton. The criteria for such an honor are determined by the Journalism President.
One of the goals of the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC) according to the UIL website is to emphasize journalistic writing and coverage in student publications as a means of teaching higher order thinking skills in students.
“It’s a rare and honorable award because student and their teachers cannot apply for it and even rarer is that it is seldom awarded to underclassmen,” said Stephan Malick, West Brook High School Journalism Advisor. Mr. Malick further explains that, “the director maybe gives out 4 or 5 in any given year state-wide”.
