Feedback from students will be used by BISD’s Food Services Department to help determine which items will show up in school cafeterias next school year.

“The hamburger is one of our common menu items, therefore, purchasing the right hamburger patty we have to select one that our students are going to enjoy” says Barbara Perez, Food Service Supervisor.

Three schools at each grade level (Dishman, Odom and West Brook) were selected, whereby students from each school observed the products being prepared as well as sampled the different products.  Students completed an evaluation form at the end of the taste testing. The data submitted from the students will be used to make a decision as to what products are purchased.

Nutrition education is an important part of Food Services’ role in providing students with healthy and nutritious meals.  Therefore, Food Services also took this opportunity to share nutritious facts as a comparison between the hamburger patties served in school meals to the hamburger patties sold at other fast food restaurants took place.

Students were first informed of the many health risks associated with fatty diets and greasy foods.  Afterwards, the look of shock overcame students as they poured 9.5625 grams of fat into a clear tube and told that was the total grams for the average fast food burger.
