Registration isopen nowand seatswill beallottedona firstregistered,firstserved basis. Setfor Friday, Aug. 9,atDishman ElementarySchool,the daylong eventfeaturesworkshopsand information boothsabout scholarships, vouchers,governmentbenefits,legalauthority,variousserviceprogramsintheGoldenTriangle area and understanding behavioralalternatives. Free toparticipants,theacademyalsoincludeslunch.
Therearesome1,600children in BISDwhofaceeducationalobstaclessuchasintellectual disabilitiesand physical challenges,including autism,dyslexia,speechimpedimentsand emotional concerns.Dr. Susan Barefield,executivedirector oftheBISDDepartment of Special Education,said,“Ihopeparentswilltake advantageofthis wealthofinformation thatwill be providedattheacademy. Not onlywillthere be exhibitorson handtoshareinformation aboutand opportunitiesfor using their services,butalsoseveralstate and governmententitiesareavailingthemselvesto help facilitate parents gettingthebestservicesavailable for their children. Furthermore,wehavea lineof greatpresentersto help participantsunderstand available benefitsand thewiderange ofservicesinour region tohelp special needschildren.”
